Description
The two Form Panels dating from 1994 respectively number among the early works by Tilo Schulz. In the first years of his artistic work he explored formal tendencies in painting. In 1995, he summarized his ideas in a publication entitled Formenmalerei (Painting Forms). In writing this program, Tilo Schulz put up for discussion the consensus of Western aesthetics, according to which non-figurative painting had to be free of social references, the argument being that it was the opposite of figurative painting and should not be exploited for political purposes.
By contrast, Tilo Schulz set out to formulate specific references to the world without creating representational works. He used everyday materials: school blackboards, chalk and industrial varnish. As if attempting to comprehend the ritual of everyday life he inscribed everyday surfaces with artistic forms. Similarly, in a temporary work that he realized in 1994 during the Media Biennial in Leipzig, he drew rectangular shapes in chalk on green lawn, like the markings on a sports field.
